Australia Entertainment Visa: Sponsor vs Supporter Explained

Reviewed 24 September 2026. One of the most important structural questions in an Australian Artist & Entertainment Visa matter is whether the international performer needs an approved temporary activities sponsor or an Australian supporter.

The answer depends principally on where the applicant applies and the intended length of stay.

When does a 408 Entertainment applicant need a supporter?

Home Affairs states that a person applying under the Entertainment Activities stream does not need a sponsor if they apply outside Australia and intend to stay for less than three months. In that situation, the applicant must have a supporter.

For short concert tours, festival appearances and brief filming engagements, this can be an important distinction because the supporter route avoids the need for an approved sponsor solely on account of that short offshore engagement.

When is a sponsor required?

A sponsor is required where the person applies in Australia, or where they apply outside Australia and intend to stay for more than three months.

The sponsor should generally be an eligible Australian organisation, government agency or foreign government agency operating in Australia and must meet the applicable sponsorship requirements.

Who can be a supporter?

Home Affairs permits certain organisations and individuals to support an Entertainment Activities application. Depending on the circumstances, this can include an Australian organisation lawfully established and operating in Australia, an Australian government agency, a foreign government agency operating in Australia, or an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

A supporter should have a genuine connection with the proposed entertainment activity and be able to provide the required invitation, itinerary and supporting statements.

What does a supporter need to provide?

Home Affairs identifies a letter of invitation including an itinerary of dates and venues, together with supporting evidence about the supporter and any dependent family members included in the application.

For promoters, managers and event organisers, the practical lesson is that the supporter letter should not be generic. It should accurately describe who is performing, where, when, for whom and under what engagement.

Sponsor/supporter status does not replace the contract

The artist must still have a contract or other proof of the Australian activity. Sponsor or supporter evidence and the talent contract should tell the same story.

Depending on the entertainment category, union consultation may also be required. Film and television performers can additionally require an Arts certificate.

Examples

Example 1: two-week concert tour

An international singer applies offshore for a 16-day Australian tour. A supporter may be sufficient, provided the other Entertainment Activities requirements are met.

Example 2: six-month theatre season

A performer applying offshore for a six-month engagement needs a sponsor because the intended stay exceeds three months.

Example 3: artist already in Australia

An applicant applying in Australia needs a sponsor, irrespective of the fact that the proposed entertainment activity itself might be short.

Common mistakes

  • assuming every performer automatically needs a sponsor;
  • treating the supporter letter as a formality;
  • failing to match the itinerary to the contract;
  • using the wrong entertainment category;
  • overlooking union consultation;
  • waiting until travel is imminent before resolving sponsorship.
