461 Visa Processing Time in 2026: Why Some Applications Take Longer
Updated September 2026. The New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Subclass 461) visa allows eligible non-New Zealand family members of certain New Zealand citizens to live, work and study in Australia for five years. Processing time varies significantly between applications.
For legal assistance, see our Subclass 461 service.
Is there a fixed 461 processing time?
No. Home Affairs directs applicants to its visa processing-time guide, which is based on recently decided applications and is a guide only. It is not a guaranteed timeframe for an individual application.
Why can Subclass 461 take longer?
Home Affairs identifies several avoidable causes of delay, including incomplete forms, missing documents, additional information requests and time needed to verify information.
For a 461 application, common delay areas can include:
- relationship evidence;
- New Zealand citizen status evidence;
- ten-year residential and travel history;
- police clearances;
- health checks;
- biometrics where requested;
- secondary applicant documents; and
- paper-form errors or missing signatures.
Does Subclass 461 use a paper application?
Home Affairs currently instructs applicants to use Form 147 for the Subclass 461 application. Paper-based processing makes form accuracy and document organisation particularly important.
Can health and police checks reduce delay?
Home Affairs encourages complete 461 applications and notes that completing required health checks and providing necessary police clearances where possible can help avoid delays.
What if the New Zealand family member becomes Australian?
This can materially affect future Subclass 461 eligibility. Existing 461 holders retain their visa until expiry, but Home Affairs states that family members of SCV holders who acquire Australian citizenship are no longer eligible to apply for a new 461 from the citizenship acquisition date.
Can you contact the processing centre?
Home Affairs provides a dedicated New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship visa processing centre form for certain enquiries and document issues.
