482 SAF Levy Refund: When Can an Employer Get Money Back?

SUBCLASS 482 SKILLS IN DEMAND • REVIEWED 26 SEPTEMBER 2026

The SAF levy is not generally refundable simply because a sponsorship strategy changes. Home Affairs permits refunds only in specified circumstances, making it important to understand the rules before withdrawing or replacing a nomination.

Current-law resource: See our Subclass 482 Skills in Demand hub. Current employer guidance is available from Department of Home Affairs.

Early departure within the first 12 months

For a SID visa granted for more than 12 months, a refund can be available for unused full years if the visa holder leaves the sponsoring employer within the first 12 months of employment.

Visa refused on health or character grounds

Where the nomination is approved but the associated visa is refused on health or character grounds, Home Affairs lists this as one of the circumstances in which the SAF levy may be refunded.

Withdrawal scenarios

Refunds can also arise in specified withdrawal situations, including certain incorrect turnover or employment-period information and where a concurrent sponsorship application is refused or withdrawn. The exact regulatory ground should be matched before requesting a refund.

    Frequently asked questions

Does meeting one 482 requirement guarantee approval?
No. Sponsorship, nomination and visa criteria operate together and each relevant criterion must be satisfied.

Should employers prepare the nomination before the worker’s visa?
The applications are connected. Evidence should be planned as one consistent case even though the legal criteria are distinct.

    Can requirements change?
Yes. Salary thresholds, occupation settings and policy can change. This article was legally reviewed on 26 September 2026.
