482 Visa Age Limit: Is There a Maximum Age for a Skills in Demand Visa?

Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa • Reviewed 26 September 2026

There is no general maximum age criterion for the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa itself. Age becomes strategically important because many permanent residence pathways have separate age requirements.

Current framework: The Skills in Demand visa replaced the former TSS visa on 7 December 2024. This article should be read with our Subclass 482 visa hub and the current Home Affairs requirements.

No general maximum age for the 482 visa

Unlike a number of permanent skilled visas, the Subclass 482 SID visa does not impose a general age ceiling simply because an applicant is over 45. The applicant must still satisfy the stream’s skills, experience, English, health and character requirements.

Why age 45 still matters

Applicants often confuse 482 eligibility with the age rules for the Employer Nomination Scheme Subclass 186. The 186 visa generally has an under-45 requirement unless an exemption applies. That can make timing critical for a worker whose objective is permanent residence.

Workers aged 45 and over

A 482 may still be available to an older worker, but the long-term strategy should be assessed before committing to the pathway. Labour agreements and specified 186 age exemptions can be relevant in some cases.

Plan backwards from the PR goal

For workers approaching an age threshold, the best strategy is often to identify the intended permanent pathway first, then determine whether the proposed 482 period leaves enough time to satisfy that pathway’s requirements.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I get a 482 visa at age 50?

Potentially, yes. There is no general maximum age for the 482 itself, but the occupation and all other eligibility criteria must be met.

Can someone over 45 get PR after a 482?

Sometimes. Specific exemptions or labour-agreement concessions may apply, but there is no universal exemption for every 482 holder.

Does Specialist Skills remove the 186 age rule?

Not automatically. Permanent visa age requirements and exemptions must be assessed separately.

    Should I apply for 482 if I am 44?

Age can materially affect PR planning, so the 186 or other intended permanent pathway should be assessed before deciding timing.
