Change Occupation on a 482 Visa: New Nomination, New Visa and Promotion Rules
A 482 worker can sometimes be promoted without a new visa if the underlying duties do not change, but changing to a genuinely different role or occupation can require both a new nomination and a new visa.
Changing duties can trigger a new nomination and visa
Home Affairs states that if the worker’s role changes to a new role with new duties, the sponsor must submit a new nomination and the worker will also need to apply for and be granted a new visa.
Promotion without changing duties
A promotion can be possible without a new nomination where the worker’s substantive duties do not change. The employer should document why the position remains the same nominated occupation.
Changing occupation with the same employer
Remaining with the same sponsor does not avoid the occupation requirement. Condition 8607 ties the worker to the nominated occupation on the most recent 482 grant.
Changing salary only
An employer can generally increase salary without a new nomination if the duties do not change, provided the employment remains compliant. A significant salary change that reflects a different role should be reviewed carefully.
Why ANZSCO matching matters
A new title does not necessarily mean a new occupation, and the same title does not necessarily mean the duties are unchanged. Compare the actual tasks, responsibility level and ANZSCO classification.

Frequently asked questions
Can I be promoted on a 482 visa?
Yes, potentially, if the duties remain within the nominated occupation. A new role with new duties requires a different approach.
Do I need a new visa if only my title changes?
Not necessarily. The actual duties and occupation classification are more important than the title alone.
Can I change from one ANZSCO code to another?
That normally requires a new nomination and new visa before working in the new occupation.
Can I start the new role while the new visa is processing?
Do not start work outside the conditions of the existing visa. Obtain advice on the nomination, visa and work-right timing.
