482 Visa for Cooks 2026: Requirements, English, Skills & Sponsorship
Cooks may have employer-sponsored visa options in Australia, but the correct Subclass 482 pathway depends on the nominated occupation, the employer’s sponsorship arrangements and the current Skills in Demand criteria. The correct pathway depends on whether the occupation is available under the standard Skills in Demand settings or an applicable labour agreement and whether the applicant meets the specific skills and English settings.
Cook ANZSCO 351411 and the Core Skills Occupation List
Cook is ANZSCO 351411. It is included on the current Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) identified as the assessing authority. Cook and Chef are separate occupations, so the nominated duties, required skill level and supporting evidence should be assessed against the correct occupation before nomination.
For the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa, Cook may be nominated through the Core Skills stream where the current sponsorship, nomination, salary, occupation and visa requirements are satisfied. A skills assessment may be required for some applicants under the applicable legislative settings.
Visa pathways for cooks in Australia
Depending on the applicant, employer and location, pathways beyond a 482 visa may include the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme, the Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa, and certain state-nominated skilled pathways such as Subclasses 190 and 491 where all relevant criteria are met. The requirements differ between visa subclasses and can include age, English, skills assessment, work experience, state nomination and regional residence requirements.
A future permanent-residence pathway should therefore be considered when the initial sponsorship strategy is designed rather than assuming every 482 holder will automatically qualify for permanent residence.
Occupation pathway comes first
Do not assume Chef and Cook are interchangeable occupations. The duties, occupation code and applicable standard or labour-agreement pathway must be identified before the employer advertises or nominates the role.
English can vary under labour agreements
Some industry labour agreements contain English concessions or specific score settings. The exact agreement and occupation must be checked; concessions available under one agreement should not be applied to a standard Core Skills case.
Skills and work experience
The worker must meet the occupation-specific skill and experience settings. Where a mandatory skills assessment applies, the timing and assessing authority requirements should be checked before visa lodgement.

Frequently asked questions
Does meeting one 482 requirement guarantee approval?
No. Sponsorship, nomination and visa criteria operate together and each relevant criterion must be satisfied.
Should employers prepare the nomination before the worker’s visa?
The applications are connected. Evidence should be planned as one consistent case even though the legal criteria are distinct.
Can requirements change?
Yes. Salary thresholds, occupation settings and policy can change. This article was legally reviewed on 26 September 2026.
