482 Visa English Exemptions 2026: Who Does Not Need IELTS or PTE?
Not every primary Subclass 482 applicant needs to sit IELTS, PTE or another approved English test. The current Skills in Demand framework contains specific exemptions, and the exemption should be evidenced rather than assumed.
Passport-based English exemptions
Home Affairs currently exempts eligible passport holders from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America from the normal English test requirement for the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams.
Five years of study in English
An exemption can also apply where the applicant completed at least five years of full-time study at secondary or higher level and most classes were conducted in English. Evidence should show the institutions, level of study, years and contact hours.
Registration or licensing exemption
If the nominated occupation requires a licence, registration or membership and the applicant already obtained it by meeting an English standard equal to or higher than the 482 requirement, an exemption can apply.
Overseas business employee exemption
An employee of an overseas business nominated to work in Australia by that business or an associated entity can be exempt if guaranteed annual earnings are at least $96,400, subject to the current rule and evidence.
Do dependants need the same English test?
The primary applicant’s English criterion is different from the rules affecting secondary applicants. Family members should be assessed separately for any applicable visa charges or requirements.
