482 Visa Processing Time After Medical: What Happens After Health Examinations?

Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa • Reviewed 26 September 2026

Completing the medical examination can feel like the final step in a 482 application, but there is no fixed number of days between medical clearance and visa grant. Health is only one component of the application.

Current law: This guide addresses a specific 482 search question under the current Skills in Demand framework. See our Subclass 482 hub for the complete pathway.

What happens after the medical?

The panel physician submits examination results through the Department’s health system. The case may be finalised without further action, or additional medical information can be requested if the Medical Officer of the Commonwealth needs more evidence.

Does medical clearance mean the visa is about to be granted?

Not necessarily. The Department may still be assessing the nomination, character, work experience, English, skills assessment, identity or other criteria. Medical completion should not be treated as a grant prediction.

Why some applications move quickly after medicals

If every other criterion has already been assessed and the health result was the final outstanding item, a decision can follow relatively soon. But that is a case-management circumstance, not a legal processing guarantee.

What if further health information is requested?

Applicants may be asked for specialist reports, repeat tests or additional examinations. Complex health matters can take longer and may raise health-waiver issues only where the relevant visa criterion permits a waiver.

Should you contact Home Affairs after medicals?

Repeated status enquiries do not generally accelerate a case. Check ImmiAccount, ensure every request has been answered and use the Department’s enquiry channels only where the case is outside normal parameters or there is a genuine urgent issue.

    Frequently asked questions

How many days after medical does a 482 get granted?

There is no fixed period. The medical is only one part of the overall decision.

Can the nomination still be refused after medicals?

Yes. Health examinations do not determine nomination eligibility.

What does ‘health clearance provided’ mean?

It generally indicates the health assessment has progressed, but it does not mean all visa criteria are satisfied.

Can urgent employment speed up a decision?

Priority settings and urgent requests are controlled by the Department and do not guarantee expedition.
