Australia Transit Visa for Indian Passport Holders: Subclass 771 and the 8-Hour Rule

Updated September 2026. Indian travellers sometimes assume that no Australian visa is required because they are only changing flights. For most ordinary Indian passport holders, that assumption can be wrong.

Can Indian passport holders transit Australia without a visa?

Australia has a Transit Without a Visa (TWOV) list for certain nationalities and travel documents. Home Affairs’ current list includes Indian official passport holders, but ordinary Indian passport holders are not included in the general Indian exception.

What visa may be required?

The Transit Visa (Subclass 771) allows an eligible traveller to enter and remain in Australia for up to 72 hours while transiting to another country.

How much does Subclass 771 cost?

Home Affairs currently lists the Subclass 771 application charge as free.

What evidence is required?

Home Affairs states that transit applicants should provide:

  • passport identity documents;
  • confirmed onward travel from Australia within 72 hours;
  • evidence that they can enter the destination country; and
  • details of their transit arrangements.

What is the 8-hour rule?

Some eligible TWOV travellers can remain airside for less than eight hours without an Australian visa if they have confirmed onward travel and do not need to clear immigration. But nationality and airport arrangements matter.

Why can baggage create a visa problem?

Home Affairs warns that travellers may need to clear immigration to collect and re-check baggage or transfer between terminals. If immigration clearance is required, a visa is required even where another TWOV criterion might otherwise be met.

Can you use an existing Australian visa for transit?

Possibly. Home Affairs notes that a person who already holds another valid Australian visa permitting transit may not need a Subclass 771. Importantly, being granted a Transit Visa can end most other Australian visas, so existing visa holders should check VEVO before applying.
