Indian Police Clearance Certificate for Australian Visa Applications: PCC Guide 2026

Updated September 2026. Indian nationals applying for an Australian visa, permanent residence or citizenship may be asked to provide an Indian Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). For people living in Australia, the current process is handled through the Indian Consular Application Centre network operated by VFS Global on behalf of the High Commission and Consulates of India.

Search demand for “Indian police clearance certificate Australia” is significant, but the most important point is practical: obtain the correct PCC for the immigration purpose, use the correct Indian consular process and make sure the details match the passport and Australian application.

When might Home Affairs ask for an Indian PCC?

Depending on the visa or citizenship application, Australian authorities may request police certificates from countries where the applicant has lived for the relevant period. Indian applicants commonly need a PCC in Partner Visa, employer-sponsored, skilled, citizenship, character and other migration matters.

How do you apply for an Indian PCC from Australia?

VFS currently sets out the process as follows:

  1. Complete the Government of India online PCC application form.
  2. Review the current PCC checklist and supporting document requirements.
  3. Book an appointment with the Indian Consular Application Centre and pay the applicable service fee, or use the available postal process where permitted.
  4. Submit the application and supporting documents through the correct centre for your jurisdiction.

Can you apply by post?

Yes, VFS currently provides a postal pathway for PCC applications in Australia. The application must be sent to the correct jurisdiction and include the required documents and fees. Incomplete applications can be delayed or returned.

How do you track the PCC?

VFS states that passport, PCC and surrender applications can be tracked through the Passport Seva system using the application reference number and date of birth. A separate VFS tracking system is also available after the application has been accepted into its system.

Common PCC problems in Australian migration cases

  • passport number or name does not match the Australian visa application;
  • incorrect Indian address history;
  • using an outdated PCC where Home Affairs asks for a current certificate;
  • waiting until a Department deadline is almost due before applying;
  • not explaining changes of name, passport or marital status; and
  • assuming the PCC process and the Australian character requirement are the same thing.

What if your PCC is delayed?

If Home Affairs has issued a document request with a deadline and the Indian PCC is still pending, keep evidence showing when you applied, your receipt or reference number, and any status updates. Whether an extension should be requested depends on the Australian migration matter and the deadline in the Department’s correspondence.

Does a clear PCC guarantee the Australian visa?

No. A PCC is only one part of the character assessment. Australian migration law can require disclosure of charges, convictions or other conduct even where a certificate is clear.
