Subclass 804 Bridging Visa Guide: BVA, BVB, Travel, Work Rights & Medicare

The Subclass 804 Aged Parent Visa is one of the few Parent Visa pathways that can be applied for onshore and can support an associated bridging visa in eligible circumstances. That makes it attractive to some aged parents already visiting family in Australia — but it also creates important questions about Bridging Visa A, Bridging Visa B, travel, work rights, Medicare, Visitor Visa conditions and the very long Parent Visa queue.

This guide focuses specifically on the Subclass 804 bridging-visa strategy. For the visa itself, see our Aged Parent Visa 804 Lawyers Australia page and our main Parent Visa hub.

Subclass 804 bridging visa — quick answer

An eligible onshore Subclass 804 applicant may receive an associated bridging visa. A Bridging Visa A generally permits lawful stay after the current substantive visa ceases, subject to its grant and conditions. It does not permit re-entry after leaving Australia. A parent who needs to travel while the 804 remains pending should usually consider a Bridging Visa B before departure.

Why the Subclass 804 is different from most Parent Visas

Home Affairs identifies Subclass 804, 864 and 884 as the ordinary onshore Parent Visa products for which associated bridging visas can be available. Most Parent Visa subclasses are designed to be applied for in circumstances that do not generate the same ordinary onshore bridging-visa position.

The Subclass 804 is permanent if ultimately granted, but it is capped and queued. As at 31 May 2026, Home Affairs reported final processing around queue dates from 2014. Families therefore need to distinguish lawful temporary stay on a bridging visa from the eventual permanent visa outcome.

When does a Bridging Visa A become relevant after an 804 application?

Where a valid 804 application gives rise to a Bridging Visa A, the BVA generally becomes the visa that keeps the applicant lawful after their current substantive visa ends. The exact start event, conditions and work rights appear on the bridging visa grant notice and should be checked in VEVO.

Lodging an 804 application does not mean every Visitor Visa condition disappears immediately. Until the substantive visa ends, the parent remains bound by its conditions.

Does an 804 Bridging Visa A let you travel overseas?

No. A Bridging Visa A is not a travel facility. If the parent leaves Australia while relying on a BVA, the BVA will generally cease and the person may be unable to return on that visa.

Home Affairs states that the Bridging Visa B (Subclass 020) is the bridging visa designed to permit departure and re-entry during a specified travel period while the substantive visa application remains unresolved.

Bridging Visa B for an Aged Parent Visa 804 applicant

To obtain a BVB, an applicant generally needs to be in Australia, hold or have held the relevant BVA/BVB position and show a substantial reason for wanting to leave and return while the substantive application remains under consideration. The Department decides the travel period.

Home Affairs recommends applying for a BVB no more than three months and not less than two weeks before intended travel. Last-minute applications carry the obvious risk that the BVB is not decided before the flight.

What counts as a substantial reason to travel?

There is no single exhaustive list. Common reasons can include important family events, caring responsibilities, serious illness or death of a relative, business obligations or other genuine travel needs. The strength of the application depends on the explanation, dates, supporting documents and the applicant’s immigration circumstances.

A BVB should not be treated as an automatic travel endorsement simply because an 804 application may remain in the queue for many years.

What happens if you leave Australia without a BVB?

A parent who departs while relying on a BVA can lose the ability to return on that bridging visa. Because Subclass 804 is an onshore pathway and the applicant’s location can matter at key stages, unplanned departure can create serious practical and legal problems.

Before booking travel, check the current visa, bridging visa, travel facility, passport validity and whether any other visa application would be needed to return.

Can you work on an 804 bridging visa?

Do not assume that an associated bridging visa automatically carries unrestricted work rights. Work conditions depend on the particular bridging visa granted. The visa grant notice and VEVO should be checked.

Where work permission is restricted, a separate application or evidence of financial hardship may sometimes become relevant depending on the bridging visa class and circumstances. The 804 application itself does not guarantee permission to work.

Can you get Medicare while waiting for the Subclass 804?

This is frequently misunderstood. A Bridging Visa A by itself does not automatically make every 804 applicant eligible for Medicare. Services Australia states that a person can enrol once the Parent Visa is granted. While an 804 application is still being assessed, Medicare may be available to an applicant from a country covered by a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement if the person meets that agreement’s conditions.

Because Medicare eligibility and immigration status are separate systems, families should check the current Services Australia rules rather than infer eligibility from the bridging visa grant.

What if the Visitor Visa has Condition 8503 — No Further Stay?

This is one of the most important pre-lodgement checks. A No Further Stay condition such as 8503 can prevent most temporary and permanent visa applications from being validly lodged while the person is in Australia.

Home Affairs allows a request to waive a No Further Stay condition where there has been a major change in circumstances and the waiver requirements are met. A waiver request does not itself remove the condition, and an application should not be lodged on the assumption that a waiver will later be granted.

Do you need to be old enough for the Age Pension?

For the ordinary Subclass 804 pathway, the primary applicant must be old enough to receive the Australian Age Pension. The relevant age test is part of the visa criteria and should be checked before relying on the onshore strategy.

What other major 804 criteria still apply?

A bridging visa does not replace the substantive 804 criteria. The parent ordinarily needs an eligible sponsor, must satisfy the Balance of Family Test, health and character requirements and, at the relevant stage, Assurance of Support. Home Affairs can also request health or character assessment for non-migrating family members in some circumstances.

What is the practical risk of a very long 804 queue?

The bridging-visa strategy can allow an eligible applicant to remain lawfully in Australia while the 804 is pending, but families need to plan for a long period in which travel, private health costs, Medicare eligibility, work rights, ageing, changed health and family circumstances may all matter.

For a direct comparison of aged-parent pathways, see our 804 vs 864 vs 884 guide.

Planning travel while an 804 is pending?

Check the parent’s current substantive visa, BVA/BVB grant, travel dates, No Further Stay conditions and passport before booking. A long Parent Visa queue does not make Bridging Visa B travel automatic.

Subclass 804 bridging visa FAQs

Does applying for an 804 automatically give me a Bridging Visa A?

An associated bridging visa can be available for eligible valid onshore 804 applications, but the actual grant notice controls your status and conditions. Do not rely on an assumption; check the bridging visa record.

Can I travel to my home country on a BVA?

A BVA does not provide re-entry rights. A BVB should be considered before departure if you need to leave and return while the 804 remains pending.

Can a BVB be granted for several years because the 804 queue is long?

The Department specifies the BVB travel period. The fact that an 804 may remain unresolved for years does not automatically determine the BVB travel facility.

Can I use Medicare on an 804 bridging visa?

Not automatically. Services Australia identifies limited pre-grant eligibility for 804 applicants from Reciprocal Health Care Agreement countries who satisfy the relevant agreement.

Can I work full-time while waiting for 804?

Work rights depend on the conditions attached to the particular bridging visa. Check VEVO before starting work.

Does the BVB change my 804 queue date?

Ordinary BVB travel does not itself change the Parent Visa queue date, but travel and status still need to be managed carefully because the 804 is an onshore pathway.

Bridging Visa A conditions can matter for years

Because the Subclass 804 queue is very long, the bridging visa is not a short administrative bridge in the ordinary sense. For some families it becomes the parent’s practical status in Australia for a substantial period. That makes the conditions on the BVA important from the outset.

Check VEVO rather than relying on a friend’s experience. Work rights, reporting obligations and other conditions can differ. If circumstances change, obtain advice before assuming another bridging visa can be granted on better terms.

What happens if the parent’s passport expires while on a bridging visa?

An expired passport does not automatically decide the Parent Visa, but identity and travel documents should be kept current. A new passport should be notified to Home Affairs through the appropriate process. This is especially important before any Bridging Visa B application or international travel because the BVB and airline travel will rely on valid passport details.

Can an 804 applicant leave Australia for several months?

A BVB can authorise travel during a specified period, but the Department decides the travel facility and the applicant must show substantial reasons. A long absence should also be considered against the practical nature of an onshore aged-parent strategy. If repeated or lengthy travel is expected, the family should plan the BVB timing rather than repeatedly booking flights first and dealing with status afterwards.

What evidence can support a BVB request?

  • medical evidence about an ill relative overseas
  • funeral or bereavement documents
  • wedding or significant family-event invitations
  • evidence of business, property or legal obligations overseas
  • travel itinerary and proposed dates
  • a clear explanation of why the parent must return to Australia

The BVB application should be proportionate to the reason. A concise, documented explanation is usually more useful than a generic statement that the parent wishes to travel.

Can an 804 applicant apply for a different visa while holding a BVA?

Potentially, depending on the visa and the applicant’s legal status, but this should not be assumed. Section 48, onshore application bars, previous refusals, the current substantive/bridging visa history and the eligibility rules for the new visa can all matter. A new application can also affect the strategic value of keeping the 804 alive.

What if the parent needs urgent overseas medical treatment?

Urgency may strengthen the reason for travel, but it does not remove the need for a BVB before departure where re-entry on the bridging visa is required. If the medical situation is genuinely urgent, provide clear evidence and request prompt consideration, while recognising Home Affairs does not publish guaranteed BVB processing times.

Private health insurance remains important even where Medicare may be available

Services Australia’s limited pre-grant Medicare rules for some 804 applicants do not mean every healthcare cost is covered. Older applicants can face substantial gaps, waiting periods or services outside Medicare. Families should consider private insurance and out-of-pocket medical planning separately from visa eligibility.

Case example: parent on Visitor Visa lodges valid 804

A parent holds a Visitor Visa without a No Further Stay condition, meets the aged-parent requirement and lodges a valid 804. The BVA is granted but is not yet in effect while the Visitor Visa remains current. The parent must continue complying with the Visitor Visa until it ceases. Only then does the BVA become the operative status according to its grant terms.

Case example: parent books travel before checking BVB

A parent on a BVA books a trip overseas and assumes the BVA allows return. It does not. If the parent departs without a granted BVB, the bridging visa may cease and return to Australia can become a separate immigration problem. The safer order is: check VEVO, prepare the BVB, wait for grant, confirm the travel period, then travel within that period.
