International business leaders planning global mobility and intra-company transfers to Australia

Move critical people with an assignment strategy that accounts for entity, timing, work rights and long-term retention.
International workforce mobility

The visa is one component of a commercial deployment.

Intra-company transfers often involve institutional knowledge, client commitments, project deadlines and executive responsibilities that do not fit a simple ‘labour shortage’ narrative. We map the most defensible visa pathway to the assignment and intended duration.

Executive mobility

C-suite, senior managers and key leaders relocating to establish, manage or expand Australian operations.

Specialist transfers

Technical, product, consulting and proprietary-knowledge specialists deployed from overseas group entities.

Short-term assignments

Time-sensitive work requiring analysis of Subclass 400, business visitor or longer-term sponsored pathways.

Corporate legal work

Coordinate the assignment, the visa and the long-term plan.

A corporate mobility strategy should account for timing, employing entity, work scope, project duration, family, future residence and what happens if the assignment changes.

What we handle

  • Intra-company transfer pathway analysis
  • Subclass 400 versus 482 strategy
  • Overseas business sponsorship
  • Executive and specialist mobility
  • Business visitor versus work-right analysis
  • Family-member coordination
  • Permanent residence and retention planning
  • Mobility policy review
  • Coordination with employment, tax and relocation advisers
  • Processing-priority and timing strategy

Key risk points

  • Using a short-stay visa for work that is not genuinely short-term
  • Assuming an intra-company transfer has a dedicated Australian visa category
  • Mismatch between the employing entity and sponsor
  • Project timing that ignores current processing priorities
  • Scope creep after arrival
  • No PR or succession plan for key personnel

Employer FAQs

Global mobility questions for employers.

General information only. Specific advice depends on the business, sponsored workforce, decision or proposed transaction.

Is there an Australian intra-company transfer visa?
Australia does not operate a single universal visa called an intra-company transfer visa. The correct pathway depends on the assignment and may involve Subclass 400, 482 or another visa.
Can we send a specialist on a business visitor visa to work?
Business visitor permissions are limited. Productive work can require a work-authorised visa. The actual activities should be reviewed before travel.
Can an overseas group company sponsor a worker?
Potentially. Overseas business sponsorship and Australian entity structures need to be analysed against the current sponsorship rules.
Can we plan permanent residence from the start?
Yes. For key personnel, early PR planning can avoid using temporary visas without understanding the eventual retention pathway.

Legal review: 25 September 2026. Current employer sponsorship and work visa settings should be checked against Home Affairs employer guidance.
