Welcoming Australia’s newest citizens – Australia Day
On Australia Day 2025, more than 380 citizenship ceremonies will take place across the country, hosted by local government councils and community organizations.
These events will welcome over 20,600 new citizens from 150+ countries, as they pledge their commitment to Australia and embrace their new identity as Australians.
Becoming an Australian citizen is a privilege, symbolizing a shared commitment to the nation’s values of diversity, inclusion, and unity.
This celebration highlights the strength that comes from embracing different cultures and traditions, uniting communities across the country.
National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony in Canberra
In Canberra, the National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony will take place on 26 January 2025 at Rond Terrace.
The ceremony will also feature the Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, leading the Australian Citizenship Affirmation, offering a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the nation’s unity, shared values, and sense of belonging.

A Legacy of Citizenship Since 1949
Since the first citizenship ceremony in 1949, over 6 million people have proudly embraced Australian citizenship, becoming an integral part of the nation’s story.
These ceremonies are more than formalities—they represent the spirit of unity and the core Australian values of respect, equality, freedom, and compassion.
Australia continues to warmly welcome new citizens who pledge their commitment to these principles, enriching the nation’s diversity and strengthening its sense of belonging and inclusion.
Active Citizenship and the Role of Local Heroes
Australians are encouraged to build stronger communities by engaging locally, fostering inclusion, and helping others.
The Local Hero category of the Australian of the Year Awards honors those inspiring change and exemplifying core Australian values.
The 2025 Australia’s Local Hero will be selected from state and territory winners and announced on 25 January 2025.
