No 801 or 100 Invitation? How to Start the Permanent Partner Visa Stage Yourself

If two years have passed since you originally applied for your combined Partner Visa and you have not received a special email inviting you to start the permanent stage, you do not necessarily need to keep waiting. Home Affairs currently instructs eligible Subclass 820 and 309 holders to start the permanent Partner Visa assessment themselves through ImmiAccount.

This applies to the Subclass 801 permanent stage after an 820 and the Subclass 100 permanent stage after a 309.

When do you become eligible for Stage 2?

Home Affairs states that if you hold a temporary Subclass 820 or 309 and two years have passed since you applied for the Partner Visa, you are eligible for permanent-stage assessment. The two-year date runs from the original combined Partner Visa application date, not from the temporary visa grant date.

Do you need to wait for an invitation email?

No. The current Home Affairs FAQ tells eligible applicants to log in to ImmiAccount, select “New application”, choose “Family”, select “Stage 2 – Permanent Partner Visa Assessment (100, 801)” and complete the online form using the original Application ID.

Where do you find your Application ID?

Home Affairs says the Application ID can be found in correspondence such as the original acknowledgement of application received or the temporary Partner Visa grant letter. If the original Partner Visa was not lodged through the applicant’s current ImmiAccount, the application may need to be imported or technical assistance requested.

What documents should be updated?

  • Current relationship statements.
  • Updated financial evidence.
  • Current household evidence.
  • Social and commitment evidence.
  • New Form 888 statements where required.
  • Updated sponsor statutory declaration.
  • Current police certificates where required.
  • Passports and documents showing any changes to family members.

What if your relationship has changed?

Do not submit a standard Stage 2 assessment pretending the relationship is unchanged if there has been separation, family violence or the sponsor has died. Home Affairs has separate procedures for relationship cessation and special provisions that may allow some applicants to continue toward permanent residence.

What if the two-year date passed months ago?

You should still prepare and submit the Stage 2 information as soon as reasonably possible. The permanent Partner Visa processing period begins from the date of eligibility, but Home Affairs cannot properly assess the permanent stage without the required current evidence.

Illustrative case example: no email received after two years

Composite example: An 820 holder waited almost six months beyond the two-year anniversary because the couple believed Home Affairs would send an invitation link. When the application was reviewed, the original combined application date showed the permanent stage was already open. The applicant used the Application ID to create the Stage 2 assessment in ImmiAccount and uploaded current evidence rather than waiting for a separate invitation.

Stage 2 checklist

  • Confirm the original 820/801 or 309/100 lodgement date.
  • Confirm two years have passed unless a long-term relationship exception applies.
  • Locate your Application ID.
  • Start the Stage 2 assessment in ImmiAccount.
  • Upload current evidence, not just the documents used two years earlier.
  • Check police certificates and passports.
  • Notify Home Affairs of any change in relationship circumstances.

Home Affairs provides the current Stage 2 steps in its Partner Visa Frequently Asked Questions. For legal assistance, see our 820/801 hub and 309/100 hub.

General information only. Permanent-stage eligibility should be checked against the original application date and current relationship circumstances.
