Withdrawing an ART Review: Bridging Visa and Next-Step Checks

Sources checked 18 September 2026

ART withdrawal and bridging visa questions should be considered together before you give instructions to end a review. Withdrawal can affect more than the Tribunal file. Have your current status, future plans and any family members’ positions assessed first.

This guide is a decision checklist, not a recommendation to withdraw. Do not send a withdrawal instruction simply because a new option appears promising.

What happens when an ART review is withdrawn?

The ART’s withdrawal information sheet explains that a valid withdrawal before decision ends the review through dismissal and leaves the original decision unchanged. The Department is notified. Withdrawal does not erase the refusal or cancellation you were challenging.

Separate your reason for considering withdrawal from the legal effect. A change of plans, new relationship or possible application may warrant advice, but does not itself establish that ending the review is appropriate.

Check your bridging visa before acting

Gather your grant notices, current VEVO details, Tribunal correspondence and any other application records. Ask your lawyer to identify the event that affects your visa and the date or conditions that follow from it.

Do not assume everyone receives the same period after withdrawal, or that lodging something else automatically preserves the same rights. Record the advice against the actual documents rather than relying on a generic “35 days” statement online.

Questions to resolve before giving instructions

QuestionDocuments to bring
What review would end?Tribunal reference, original decision and current directions
What happens to my status?Current and previous visa grant notices
Is another option genuinely available?Relevant application history and eligibility documents
Who else is affected?Family members’ review and visa records
What arrangements follow withdrawal?Proposed dates, travel plans and outstanding obligations

Ask for a clear explanation of the alternatives and consequences. A possible future pathway should be assessed before it becomes the basis for ending an existing review.

Check authority where family members are involved

The ART’s withdrawal guidance addresses written withdrawal by an applicant or authorised representative and authority where others are included. Identify exactly whose application is being withdrawn. Do not assume one person’s instruction automatically covers every family member.

Prepare a list of names and file references for your adviser. If family members have different plans or disagree, raise that before anyone sends instructions. Keep individual status questions separate even when documents were lodged together.

Ask about fees without assuming a refund

Withdrawal does not create a general right to a full refund. Check the applicable rules for the review type and the particular reason for withdrawal. The ART’s fee guidance and withdrawal information should be read together for your matter.

Keep the payment receipt and any fee-reduction decision. Discuss fee consequences as part of the wider decision; a possible refund should not replace an assessment of status and available options.

Keep a clear instruction and confirmation record

  1. Have the consequences explained against your current documents.
  2. Identify the exact applicant and review reference.
  3. Confirm the authority of the person communicating the instruction.
  4. Use the process advised for the matter.
  5. Keep the Tribunal’s response and check the next required action.

Do not assume an email enquiry asking about withdrawal has the same effect as a completed withdrawal, or that a sent instruction can simply be ignored if you change your mind. If anything was sent in error, contact your lawyer promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Does withdrawal remove the original refusal?

No. The original decision remains. Future forms and applications must be answered accurately.

Can I rely on another person’s bridging visa timeline?

No. Have your own subclass, grant terms and circumstances checked.

What if I only want more time?

Tell your lawyer the actual problem. Ending the review is a different step from asking about a procedural timetable.
