Australia Visitor Visa From India: Subclass 600 Documents, Funds and Refusal Risks

Updated September 2026. Indian passport holders who want to visit Australia for tourism, family visits, or other permitted visitor activities will commonly consider the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600). The application is not approved simply because an Australian relative provides an invitation.

For legal assistance, see our Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) service.

What does Home Affairs assess?

The central issue is whether the applicant satisfies the requirements of the relevant Visitor Visa stream. For an Indian applicant, evidence often needs to show a credible reason for travel, sufficient funds, and circumstances consistent with a temporary visit.

What documents can strengthen an application from India?

  • valid Indian passport;
  • clear travel purpose and itinerary;
  • bank statements and evidence explaining the source of funds;
  • employment letter, salary records, or business evidence;
  • property, family, and other ties to India where relevant;
  • invitation from Australian family or friends;
  • evidence of accommodation arrangements;
  • previous international travel history; and
  • documents addressing any previous visa refusal.

Does an invitation letter guarantee the visa?

No. An invitation can explain the purpose of travel and accommodation, but Home Affairs still assesses the applicant’s own circumstances and the relevant visa criteria.

What if an Australian relative will pay for the trip?

Provide evidence of the relative’s ability to support the visit and explain the arrangement clearly. It can also be useful to show the applicant’s own financial position rather than relying entirely on a sponsor without explanation.

What are the common refusal risks for applicants from India?

  • large unexplained recent bank deposits;
  • weak employment or business evidence;
  • unclear purpose of visit;
  • inconsistent information about family circumstances;
  • very long proposed stay without a convincing explanation;
  • previous migration history not properly addressed; and
  • generic documents that do not establish the applicant’s individual circumstances.

Tourist stream or Sponsored Family stream?

Some applicants visiting close family may consider the Sponsored Family stream. Home Affairs states that this stream requires sponsorship by an eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident family member and can allow a stay of up to 12 months. A security bond may be requested.

How long does processing take?

Home Affairs publishes processing times based on recently decided applications. These are a guide only, not a guaranteed timeframe for an Indian applicant.
