Visitor Visa for Parents From India to Australia: Tourist vs Sponsored Family Stream

Updated September 2026. Many Australian families want parents living in India to visit for a birth, wedding, religious event, family reunion, or extended time with children and grandchildren. The Subclass 600 Visitor Visa is commonly used, but choosing the correct stream and presenting the family circumstances properly can affect the application.

For legal assistance, see our Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) service.

Tourist stream

The Tourist stream is commonly used where the parent is travelling for a genuine temporary visit. The application should explain the visit, proposed duration, financial arrangements, and circumstances in India.

Sponsored Family stream

The Sponsored Family stream allows an eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident family member to sponsor the visitor. Home Affairs states that the visitor must be outside Australia when applying and when the visa is decided, and a security bond may be requested.

What documents can parents in India provide?

  • Indian passport;
  • family relationship documents;
  • invitation letter from the child in Australia;
  • evidence of the child’s Australian status;
  • bank and pension evidence;
  • property or ongoing commitments in India;
  • medical or family-event evidence where relevant;
  • travel history; and
  • a clear proposed period of stay.

What if the parent is retired?

Retirement does not itself prevent a Visitor Visa. Instead of employment evidence, the application may rely on pensions, savings, property, family responsibilities, and a credible explanation of why the parent will return to India after the visit.

Can an Australian child pay all expenses?

Yes, financial support can be explained and documented. But the application should still address the parent’s own circumstances and the temporary nature of the visit.

What if the parent has had a refusal before?

Do not submit the same documents again without addressing the refusal reasons. A stronger application should deal directly with the concerns identified by the previous decision-maker.

Visitor Visa or Parent Visa?

A Visitor Visa is temporary. Families seeking a long-term migration pathway should separately consider the Parent Visa program, including contributory and non-contributory options. Visitor and Parent visas have very different criteria and processing realities.
