Can You Study on a 482 Visa? Work, Study and Family Member Rights

Updated September 2026. A Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa is primarily an employer-sponsored work visa. Holding the visa does not generally prevent the visa holder from studying, but study does not replace the sponsored-employment obligations attached to the visa.

For advice about visa conditions, see our Subclass 482 service.

Can the primary 482 holder study?

Study itself is not generally prohibited merely because a person holds a 482 visa. However, the primary holder remains subject to the work conditions attached to the sponsored visa and must continue to comply with those conditions.

Can full-time study replace the sponsored job?

No. A 482 visa is not a Student Visa. A primary applicant cannot assume that enrolling in full-time study allows them to stop complying with their sponsored-work obligations.

Can family members study?

Family members holding a 482 as secondary applicants can generally live in Australia for the validity of their visa and may study, subject to the conditions applying to their own grant. School-age dependants may also need to consider state or territory school-fee rules.

Do 482 holders receive domestic student fees?

Visa status and education-fee status are separate questions. A 482 holder should not assume that they qualify for Commonwealth-supported places, HELP loans or domestic tuition simply because they can study in Australia.

What if the course affects work hours?

The sponsored employment remains central to the primary 482 visa. Before enrolling in a course that would materially interfere with working in the nominated position, the visa holder should check their conditions and employment obligations.

Can study help with a future visa?

Further study may improve qualifications or support another career pathway, but it does not automatically create eligibility for permanent residence or another visa. The 482, 186 and skilled migration rules each have separate requirements.

Check your own visa conditions

Use VEVO and the visa grant notice to confirm the conditions applying to the individual visa. Conditions can differ between primary and secondary applicants.
