Is a Skills Assessment Required for a 482 Visa? Mandatory Occupations and Exemptions

Updated September 2026. A skills assessment is not mandatory for every Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) applicant. Home Affairs states that certain primary 482 applicants must complete a mandatory skills assessment, while other applicants may be exempt or may not be subject to the mandatory-assessment regime at all.

For advice about the visa, see our Subclass 482 Skills in Demand service.

When is a skills assessment mandatory?

The requirement depends on the applicant’s occupation, nationality, stream and the legislative instruments applying to the application. Some occupations are specifically covered by mandatory skills-assessment arrangements.

Can Home Affairs ask for a skills assessment even if it is not mandatory?

Yes. Home Affairs states that it may request a skills assessment in writing even where the applicant is not subject to a mandatory assessment requirement. This can arise where the Department needs further evidence about the applicant’s claimed skills or work background.

When should the assessment be started?

Home Affairs recommends checking the requirement before lodgement. For applicants who require a mandatory assessment, the assessment generally needs to have been commenced or completed within the applicable period before the visa application, and the reference details should be provided with the application.

What happens if the wrong assessment authority is used?

A skills assessment must be undertaken through the authority specified for the relevant occupation and assessment program. An assessment obtained for a different visa pathway or occupation may not satisfy the 482 requirement.

What evidence should be kept?

  • assessment application receipt;
  • skills-assessment outcome;
  • reference number;
  • qualification documents;
  • employment references;
  • licensing or registration evidence; and
  • documents supporting any claimed exemption.

Can a missing skills assessment cause refusal?

Potentially. If a mandatory criterion is not satisfied, the visa can be refused. Where the assessment is not mandatory but requested by the Department, failure to respond adequately can also create a serious evidentiary problem.
