Subclass 300 Interview Questions: What Home Affairs May Ask About Your Fiancé Relationship

Not every Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa applicant is interviewed. But Home Affairs can ask for further information, contact supporting witnesses or interview the applicant or sponsor where it needs to test the relationship, wedding plans or information in the application.

A Partner Visa interview is not a memory competition. The goal is to answer truthfully, consistently and from your own knowledge of the relationship.

Why might Home Affairs interview a Subclass 300 couple?

  • Limited face-to-face time.
  • A short relationship.
  • Major inconsistencies in dates or statements.
  • Previous sponsorships or marriages.
  • An arranged or culturally specific relationship needing context.
  • Questions about wedding plans.
  • Concerns that the parties do not know each other personally.

Questions about how you met

  • When and how did you first meet?
  • When did the relationship become serious?
  • When did you first meet face to face?
  • How many times have you seen each other in person?
  • Who proposed and when?

Questions about your fiancé or fiancée

  • Where does your partner work?
  • Where do they live?
  • Who are their close family members?
  • What is their previous relationship history?
  • What do you normally talk about or do together?

Questions about the wedding

  • When and where do you intend to marry?
  • Who is arranging the ceremony?
  • Which family members will attend?
  • Have you booked a celebrant, venue or other arrangements?
  • What will happen if the planned ceremony date changes?

Questions about life after marriage

  • Where will you live in Australia?
  • How will you manage finances?
  • What are your employment or study plans?
  • Do you plan to have children?
  • How will you share household responsibilities?

Do not rehearse identical answers

Real couples often remember dates differently. Minor differences are not automatically problematic. Problems arise when answers contradict major facts or appear scripted. Review the application before interview so you know what was submitted, but answer in your own words.

Case example

A Subclass 300 couple had met in person twice after a long online relationship. Before interview they reviewed their application chronology, travel dates and actual wedding arrangements rather than memorising a script. When each partner remembered one minor date differently, they explained the uncertainty instead of guessing. Their answers remained consistent on the important facts of the relationship.

Home Affairs requires Subclass 300 applicants to have met the prospective spouse face to face as adults and know each other personally. See our Subclass 300 hub and our general Partner Visa interview guide.
