When Does a Subclass 461 Visa Start? Grant Date, First Entry and the Five-Year Period
A Subclass 461 visa starts from the date it is granted. The five-year visa period does not start when you first enter Australia. Home Affairs expressly states that the visa is in effect from the grant date and permits multiple travel during the five-year period.
This is easy to misunderstand if the applicant is overseas when the decision is made and plans to move to Australia later.
Does the 461 need to be “activated” by entering Australia?
No separate activation process is described by Home Affairs. Once the visa is granted, the five-year period begins. The holder should check the grant notice for any first-entry information or visa conditions and use VEVO to confirm the current visa details.
Example: visa granted offshore
If the Subclass 461 is granted on 1 September 2026 and the holder does not move to Australia until 1 March 2027, the five-year period has already been running for six months. It does not restart on the March entry date.
Can you enter and leave Australia multiple times?
Yes. Home Affairs states that the 461 is granted with multiple entry and allows the holder to travel to and from Australia as many times as they want during the five-year period.
What if you spend most of the five years overseas?
The visa can still run while you are outside Australia. However, spending significant time overseas can matter later if you apply for another 461 or rely on particular renewal criteria. Keep records of the relationship, residence history and reasons for time outside Australia.
Does leaving Australia pause the visa?
No. International travel does not pause the five-year validity period. The expiry date remains tied to the original grant date.
Case example
A Subclass 461 was granted while the applicant was living overseas. The applicant delayed moving to Australia for almost a year because of employment commitments and assumed five full years would still be available after first entry. The grant notice showed otherwise: the visa period had started on the original grant date, leaving approximately four years when the applicant eventually relocated.
What to check after the visa is granted
- Visa grant date.
- Visa expiry date.
- Any first-entry information in the grant notice.
- Passport details linked to the visa.
- VEVO conditions.
- The future date on which renewal or another visa strategy should be reviewed.
Home Affairs states that the Subclass 461 is valid for five years from the visa grant date on the official 461 page. See our Subclass 461 hub for the complete pathway.
General information only. Always rely on the dates and conditions shown in your own visa grant notice and VEVO.
