Surrendering an Indian Passport After Australian Citizenship: What Happens Next?
Updated September 2026. India does not allow dual citizenship under its current constitutional and citizenship framework. An Indian citizen who voluntarily acquires Australian citizenship therefore needs to understand the consequences for Indian citizenship and the Indian passport.
For Australian citizenship advice, see our Australian Citizenship service.
Can you continue using an Indian passport after becoming Australian?
Do not assume that an Indian passport can continue to be used after acquisition of foreign citizenship. Former Indian citizens should follow the Government of India passport surrender process and obtain the relevant surrender documentation.
How is the surrender process handled in Australia?
VFS Global currently administers Indian passport surrender applications in Australia on behalf of the High Commission and Consulates of India. Applications can be lodged through the Indian Consular Application Centre process, including a postal option where available.
What documents may be needed?
The exact checklist should be checked immediately before applying, but commonly relevant documents include:
- the Indian passport;
- evidence of Australian citizenship;
- Australian passport where available;
- completed Indian surrender application documentation;
- identity and address documents; and
- the applicable Government and service fees.
Can you apply for OCI before surrendering the Indian passport?
VFS currently states that a person who previously held Indian citizenship must first complete surrender of the Indian passport before applying for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI).
Why keep the surrender certificate?
The surrender certificate can be important for later OCI or Indian consular processes. Keep the original and a secure digital copy.
Does Australian citizenship itself require surrender of the Indian passport?
The Australian citizenship process and the Indian passport surrender process are separate legal systems. The Australian citizenship grant does not itself complete the Indian consular surrender process.
