End of the Two-Year Extension of Post Study Work Rights
From mid-2024, the two-year extension of post-study work rights under subclass 485 will no longer be available.
The Australian Government has announced that the two-year extension of post-study work rights for the Subclass 485 visa will end in mid-2024.
This decision marks a significant shift for international graduates who were previously able to extend their stay in Australia under the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).
What Was the Post-Study Work Extension?
Introduced on 1 July 2023, the extended post-study work rights allowed international graduates with degrees in select areas of verified skill shortage to receive an additional two years on their Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa.
This policy was aimed at addressing skill shortages in key industries and supporting Australia’s workforce needs.
However, the economic environment is changing. Also, there are new policy considerations in the Australian Government’s Migration Strategy. Because of this, the extension will not be available after mid-2024.
What This Means for International Graduates
- No More Extension Applications from Mid-2024: Graduates who finish their degrees in Australia cannot apply for the extra two-year extension.
- Post-Study Work Rights Are Still Available International graduates can still apply for work rights. If you meet the Australian study requirement, you can apply for a Temporary Graduate (Post-Study Work stream) visa.
- Future Migration Planning May Change: Graduates who want to use extra work rights for Australian work experience need to reconsider their plans. They may also consider moving to other visas, like employer-sponsored or skilled migration visas.
