Parent Visitor Visa Australia 2026: Subclass 600 Cost, Processing Time, Stay & Conditions
A parent visiting Australia does not apply for a special “parent visitor visa” subclass. In most cases, the relevant visa is the Visitor Visa Subclass 600, usually through the Tourist stream or Sponsored Family stream. The fact that the visitor is a parent can still matter to the evidence, proposed stay, sponsorship, health and visa conditions.
This 2026 guide explains the Parent Visitor Visa Australia process, current application charges, processing-time expectations, documents, invitation letters, Tourist vs Sponsored Family stream, longer-validity visas, Condition 8503 No Further Stay, Condition 8558 and the difference between visiting family and applying for a permanent Parent Visa.
Parent Visitor Visa Australia 2026 — quick answer
Parents usually apply for Visitor Visa Subclass 600. The offshore base application charge for common Visitor 600 applications increased to around AUD250 from 1 July 2026, but fees vary by stream and where the application is made. Processing times are dynamic rather than a fixed parent-specific period. The grant notice controls how long the parent may stay and whether the visa is single or multiple entry.
Which Visitor Visa stream should a parent use?
Tourist stream
The Tourist stream is commonly used by parents travelling to Australia to visit children, grandchildren and other family. The parent applies as the visa applicant and provides evidence of the intended temporary visit, finances, travel history and reasons to return home.
Sponsored Family stream
The Sponsored Family stream allows an eligible family member in Australia to sponsor the visitor. Home Affairs can require a security bond in some cases. This stream can also carry mandatory or likely No Further Stay restrictions, so families considering a future onshore visa strategy should understand the consequences before choosing it.
How much does a Parent Visitor Visa cost in 2026?
Visitor Visa charges increased from 1 July 2026. The base charge for many offshore Subclass 600 Tourist and Sponsored Family applications is around AUD250. Different charges can apply for onshore applications, frequent traveller arrangements and other streams.
The visa fee is only one cost. Depending on the case, there may also be biometrics, health examinations, translations, private health insurance, police documents or a Sponsored Family security bond.
Because Home Affairs fees can change, always confirm the current Visa Pricing Table immediately before lodgement.
How long does a Parent Visitor Visa take in 2026?
Home Affairs does not publish a separate fixed processing time just for parents. Visitor Visa processing depends on the stream, passport country, application quality, seasonal demand, health or character checks and whether the Department needs more information.
Use Home Affairs’ current global processing-time tool for the relevant Visitor 600 stream rather than relying on a historic average quoted online. If there is a genuine urgent reason, provide evidence, but do not assume urgency guarantees faster processing.
Can a parent get a 3-year or longer-validity Visitor Visa?
Home Affairs can grant Visitor Visas with longer validity and multiple entries in appropriate cases, including for some parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents. However, a long visa validity period is not the same as permission to remain continuously in Australia for that entire period.
The grant notice will specify the permitted period of stay for each entry and any maximum-time conditions. A parent should not book a multi-year stay based on the visa expiry date alone.
What documents should parents provide?
A strong parent Visitor Visa application usually addresses both the purpose of the Australian visit and why the visit remains temporary.
- current passport and identity documents
- invitation letter from the child or family member in Australia
- evidence of the Australian child’s citizenship, permanent residence or visa status
- birth certificates or other evidence of the parent-child relationship
- travel itinerary and proposed stay dates
- evidence of accommodation
- bank statements, pension evidence or financial support documents
- evidence of ties to the home country, where relevant
- previous international travel and compliance history
- health insurance evidence where appropriate
- medical information if extended stay or treatment is relevant
What should an invitation letter for parents say?
The invitation should be factual rather than emotional or exaggerated. It can identify the parent, explain the relationship, give the proposed travel dates, state where the parent will stay and clarify who will pay for flights, accommodation and living costs.
If the child is funding the visit, include financial evidence. If the parent is self-funded, show the parent’s own funds. The invitation letter should be consistent with the visa application and supporting evidence.
What does Home Affairs look at when deciding whether the parent is a genuine visitor?
The Visitor Visa is for temporary stays. The Department can consider the parent’s reasons for travel, previous visa compliance, finances, family circumstances, home-country connections, travel history and whether the proposed stay is credible.
A parent does not need to have employment if they are retired. In that situation, evidence may instead focus on pension, property, spouse or family responsibilities, established residence, finances and previous compliant travel.
Can an Australian child pay for the parent’s trip?
Yes, but financial sponsorship does not remove the need for the parent to satisfy the visa criteria. The application should clearly explain who is paying and provide evidence of that person’s financial capacity.
What is Condition 8101?
Visitor Visas generally do not permit work in Australia. A parent should not undertake paid employment simply because the visa is valid for a long period.
What is Condition 8503 — No Further Stay?
Condition 8503 can prevent the visa holder from applying for most further temporary or permanent visas while in Australia. This can be very important for older parents who later consider an onshore Subclass 804 or 864 Aged Parent Visa.
A No Further Stay waiver is a separate process and depends on qualifying changed circumstances after visa grant. The family should not assume the condition can simply be removed because they now prefer a Parent Visa.
What is Condition 8558?
Condition 8558 can limit how long a Visitor Visa holder remains in Australia over an 18-month period. Families with longer-validity multiple-entry visas should calculate actual time in Australia rather than assume repeated entries allow continuous residence.
Can a parent apply for a Parent Visa after arriving on Subclass 600?
Sometimes, but not always. The parent must qualify for the relevant Parent Visa, be in the correct location and hold a visa without a condition that prevents the application. A standard Visitor Visa does not itself create a right to lodge an Aged Parent Visa onshore.
See our Visitor Visa to Aged Parent Visa guide.
Visitor Visa vs Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent Visa
If the parent wants a much longer temporary stay, Subclass 870 may be more relevant. It can allow up to three or five years per grant, up to a cumulative maximum of 10 years, but has a sponsor-first process, much higher government charges, private health insurance requirements and no ordinary work rights.

Common reasons a Parent Visitor Visa can be refused
- Home Affairs is not satisfied the proposed stay is genuinely temporary
- insufficient financial evidence
- inconsistent information about the purpose or length of stay
- weak explanation of prior overstays or visa non-compliance
- health or character issues requiring further assessment
- documents that do not support the claimed relationship or financial support
- failure to respond adequately to a Department request
Can an 85-year-old parent get a Visitor Visa?
Age alone does not prevent a Visitor Visa, but older applicants may be asked for health examinations or evidence relevant to healthcare, insurance and the proposed stay. The family should present a realistic plan for medical needs and financial support.
Can parents stay 12 months at a time?
Some Visitor Visa grants can permit longer stays, but there is no automatic 12-month entitlement because the applicant is a parent. The actual permitted stay is stated in the grant notice and depends on the Department’s decision.
Can a parent extend a Visitor Visa in Australia?
That depends on the current visa, conditions, length of stay and eligibility for another visa. A No Further Stay condition can prevent an onshore application. Check the grant notice before assuming an extension is possible.
Case example: retired parent visiting for six months
The parent has no employment to return to, but has a pension, home, spouse, established residence and prior compliant travel. The application should explain those circumstances directly rather than trying to manufacture employment evidence that does not exist.
Case example: child wants the parent to stay permanently after arrival
If the Visitor Visa has Condition 8503, the family may not be able to lodge most further visas onshore. Even without 8503, the parent still needs to qualify independently for an onshore Parent Visa. The visitor application and any later migration strategy should both be truthful and legally consistent.
Parent Visitor Visa FAQs
Is there a special Australian Visitor Visa just for parents?
No separate parent visitor subclass exists. Parents generally use Visitor Visa Subclass 600.
Can I sponsor my parents on a Tourist stream application?
You can provide financial and accommodation support, but formal sponsorship under the Sponsored Family stream is a different legal process.
Can my parent work while visiting?
No ordinary work rights arise from Subclass 600.
Does a multiple-entry visa mean unlimited time in Australia?
No. Each grant contains stay periods and may contain conditions limiting overall time in Australia.
Can a refused Parent Visitor Visa be appealed?
Review rights depend on the stream, sponsor and circumstances. The refusal letter states whether ART review is available and the deadline.
Tourist stream vs Sponsored Family stream for parents
| Issue | Tourist stream | Sponsored Family stream |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies? | The parent applies as the visitor | The parent applies with an eligible Australian family sponsor |
| Security bond | Not the ordinary structure | Home Affairs may request a bond |
| No Further Stay | Can be imposed | Particularly important to check; restrictions can apply |
| Best suited to | Ordinary family visit | Cases where formal family sponsorship is appropriate |
What makes a strong genuine-visitor case for a retired parent?
Retirement should not be treated as a weakness by itself. The application can instead show the parent’s settled life outside Australia through a spouse, other children, property, pension, community ties, medical care, financial arrangements and a history of returning after previous travel.
The evidence should match the proposed stay. A parent asking to spend 11 months in Australia needs a more detailed explanation of finances, home-country arrangements and medical planning than a parent coming for six weeks for the birth of a grandchild.
What if the parent has little money of their own?
An Australian child can support the visit financially. The application should clearly identify who is paying for flights, accommodation, health insurance and daily expenses, and provide evidence that the supporter has the capacity to do so. Financial sponsorship does not replace the genuine-visitor requirement.
Should elderly parents obtain private health insurance?
For many older visitors, private cover is prudent because visitors are generally responsible for healthcare costs unless another eligibility basis applies. A serious hospital admission in Australia can be expensive. Home Affairs may also consider health-related evidence depending on age, proposed stay and medical history.
Will Home Affairs ask an older parent to undergo medical examinations?
It can. The Department’s health requirements depend on the visa, intended stay, age, country, activities and medical history. If examinations are requested, complete them through the approved process and respond within the stated timeframe.
What if the parent has previously stayed almost the maximum time allowed?
Repeated long stays can cause Home Affairs to look closely at whether the person is genuinely visiting or effectively living in Australia on Visitor Visas. The application should explain the pattern honestly. A long-validity visa is not intended to create de facto permanent residence.
How Condition 8558 affects long-validity parent Visitor Visas
Condition 8558 is particularly important where a parent has a multiple-entry visa. It can prevent the person from remaining in Australia for more than the permitted cumulative period within an 18-month window. Families should keep an accurate travel calendar because crossing the limit can create a visa-compliance problem even where the visa expiry date is still years away.
Can a parent leave Australia and immediately return for another long stay?
Not necessarily. Re-entry depends on the grant conditions, remaining visa validity, cumulative-stay restrictions and border decision. A multiple-entry grant should not be treated as unlimited residence.
Can a Visitor Visa be cancelled for working?
Visitor Visa holders do not have ordinary work rights. Paid employment or activities that amount to work can breach conditions and expose the visa holder to cancellation or future visa problems. Family help, volunteering and informal business activity should be considered carefully if there is any doubt about whether it amounts to work.
What if the parent previously had a Visitor Visa refusal?
A new application should address the actual reasons for the earlier refusal. Simply uploading more documents without responding to the decision record can repeat the same problem. Explain what has changed, correct any misunderstandings and provide evidence directed to the refusal concern.
Review rights after a Parent Visitor Visa refusal
Not every offshore Tourist stream refusal carries ART review rights. Sponsored Family stream cases can have different review arrangements because of the Australian sponsor. The refusal letter should be checked immediately for review eligibility and the statutory deadline.
