Do You Need IELTS or an English Test for an Australian Partner Visa?

Do 820 Partner Visa applicants need IELTS?

There is no standard IELTS or PTE score requirement listed by Home Affairs for the Subclass 820/801 Partner Visa pathway. An applicant can qualify even if English is not their first language, provided the other visa criteria are met.

What about the offshore 309/100 spouse visa?

The same general position applies. The Subclass 309/100 Partner Visa is not a points-tested visa and does not ordinarily require an applicant to obtain a particular IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL score.

Does the Subclass 300 fiancé visa require English?

No general English-test score is listed as a core Subclass 300 requirement. The applicant must instead satisfy requirements including age, eligible sponsorship, intention to marry, the face-to-face meeting rule, health and character.

Why do people remember an “English requirement” for Partner Visas?

Partner migration policy has changed over time and governments have previously proposed English-related measures. Online forums and old articles can therefore create confusion. The current visa criteria should be checked rather than relying on historical proposals.

Can Partner Visa holders access English classes?

Home Affairs states that eligible Partner Visa holders may access free English-language classes through the Adult Migrant English Program. That is different from requiring an English test to obtain the Partner Visa itself.

Will Home Affairs interview you in English?

A visa interview, if one occurs, is not an IELTS examination. Where language assistance is required, the applicant should follow the Department’s instructions rather than trying to hide difficulty understanding questions.
