Sponsor Loses Their Job After Partner Visa Lodgement: Does Unemployment Affect the Visa?
If an Australian Partner Visa sponsor loses their job after the application is lodged, the application is not automatically refused. Standard Partner Visa sponsorship does not impose a general minimum-income requirement that must be maintained throughout processing.
The real question is whether the change affects the sponsor’s eligibility, the couple’s relationship evidence or any information already given to Home Affairs. For general sponsor requirements, see our Partner Visa hub.
Unemployment is not the same as sponsor ineligibility
A sponsor can be unemployed and still remain an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Losing employment does not by itself remove that status or automatically end the sponsorship.
Do you need to tell Home Affairs about the job loss?
Not every employment change is a mandatory notification simply because it happens. However, Home Affairs requires applicants to keep material information accurate and to notify relevant changes in circumstances. If employment information was relied on in the application, the change affects the couple’s address or household, or the Department asks for updated financial evidence, the new position should be explained accurately.
What if the couple’s finances change substantially?
The financial aspect of the relationship is only one part of the relationship assessment. A temporary period of unemployment does not erase an otherwise genuine relationship. Updated evidence can include savings, the other partner’s income, shared bills, budgeting, Centrelink where lawfully received, or evidence of job searching and later employment.
What if the sponsor becomes unable to support the applicant?
The Department may look at the overall circumstances, but there is no ordinary Partner Visa rule that requires a sponsor to prove a fixed salary throughout processing. Where financial hardship is severe, practical issues such as accommodation, access to services and family support can become important.
Illustrative case example: redundancy during 820 processing
Composite example: An Australian sponsor was made redundant eight months after an 820/801 application was lodged. The couple worried that the original payslips had become “wrong”. They were not false when lodged. The couple kept the application accurate by providing updated information when relevant and continued to document their shared rent, bills, savings, household and mutual support. The sponsor later obtained new employment.
What should you keep updated?
- Residential and postal address.
- Contact details.
- Material changes in household arrangements.
- Current financial evidence if requested.
- Any information that makes an earlier answer incomplete or misleading.
Home Affairs requires changes in contact details and circumstances to be updated through ImmiAccount. See the Home Affairs popular questions guidance. For the visa pathway, visit our 820/801 or 309/100 hub.
General information only. Job loss should be assessed in the context of the sponsor’s status and the evidence actually provided in the application.
