Australian Student Visa Refusal Rate Hits 10-Year High in 2026: What Students Need to Know
At a Glance
- Australian student visa refusals have reached a 10-year high, with the overall refusal rate reported at 24.2% in June 2026.
- Nepali and Indian applicants face particularly high refusal rates, with more than 51% of applications from Nepal and over 40% from India refused during 2025–26.
- The Genuine Student requirement remains a major focus. Applicants need a clear, consistent explanation linking their course, education, work history, and future career plans.
- Since 1 June 2026, most student visa refusal reviews at the ART are generally decided without an oral hearing, which makes strong written submissions and evidence even more important.
Australian Student Visa Refusal Rate 2026 Hits 10-Year High
Australia’s international student visa environment has become significantly tougher.
New Department of Home Affairs data reported by ABC News shows that the Australian student visa refusal rate reached 24.2% in June 2026, compared with just 7.9% in June 2016. This marks the highest refusal rate recorded across the past decade.
The country-level figures reveal an even sharper contrast. During the 2025–26 financial year, more than 51% of student visa applications from Nepal were refused, while India recorded a refusal rate of more than 40%. China, by comparison, recorded a refusal rate of 5.8%.
These numbers do not mean that nationality alone determines whether the Department will grant or refuse a visa. The Department says it assesses applications individually against Australia’s migration requirements. However, the data clearly shows that international students now face a much more demanding visa environment.
Australian Student Visa Refusal Rate 2026: The Numbers
The rise has become particularly visible in recent years as the Australian Government introduced measures aimed at strengthening the integrity of the international education and student visa systems. According to the Department of Home Affairs, these measures have led to greater scrutiny of applications that do not satisfy visa requirements.
Refusal Rates by Country
The difference between major student source countries is striking.
For 2025–26:
- Nepal: more than 51% refused
- India: more than 40% refused
- China: 5.8% refused
For Nepali applicants, the figures deserve particular attention because more than half of the applications were unsuccessful during the period.
ABC News reported the case of a Nepali applicant who applied in March 2026 to study a Master of Accounting in Melbourne. The Department refused his application in April after remaining unsatisfied with his proposed study plans.
However, these statistics should not encourage applicants to panic. Instead, they should highlight the importance of preparing a coherent application supported by evidence.
Why Are More Australian Student Visas Being Refused?
The Department has increase student visa refusal rate as part of broader efforts to strengthen international education integrity.
One of the most important areas of assessment is the Genuine Student requirement.
The Department may consider matters such as:
- the applicant’s circumstances in their home country
- their likely circumstances in Australia
- the value of the course to their future
- their immigration history
- any other relevant circumstances
Therefore, applicants should clearly explain why their proposed course makes sense in light of their previous education, work history and career plans.
A generic statement such as “Australia provides high-quality education” does very little by itself.
What Should You Do If Your Student Visa Is Refused?
A Student visa refusal does not automatically mean that every Australian migration pathway has ended. However, applicants should avoid rushing into another application without first understanding exactly why the Department refused the visa.
Start by reading the refusal letter carefully and identifying:
- the criterion the Department says you failed to satisfy
- the evidence the decision-maker considered
- the reasons given for the refusal
- whether you have review rights
- any applicable deadline
Some applicants may have access to an Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) review, while others may need to consider a different visa strategy. Your refusal notification should explain whether review rights exist.
This is where legal help can make a significant difference. An immigration lawyer can review the refusal decision, identify the legal and evidentiary issues, check any review deadlines, and advise whether an ART review, a fresh application, or another pathway may be more suitable. At Emigrate Lawyers, we assist students with visa refusal reviews, ART matters, and complex migration strategies so they can understand their options before taking the next step.
