Subclass 461 Renewal Checklist: Form 147, Documents and When to Apply Again

A Subclass 461 visa is temporary and normally lasts five years from the grant date. It does not automatically extend when the five years ends. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a further Subclass 461 visa and satisfy the eligibility criteria that apply to your circumstances.

Searches for “461 visa renewal checklist” and “461 visa renewal form” are common because this visa still uses a paper application process. The current application form is Form 147.

Is a 461 renewal really a renewal?

Legally, you apply for another Subclass 461 visa. It is not an automatic extension of the old grant. Home Affairs reassesses eligibility and the new visa, if granted, starts for another five-year period from its own grant date.

Core Subclass 461 renewal checklist

  • Completed current Form 147.
  • Visa application charge receipt.
  • Passport and identity documents.
  • Evidence of your relationship to the relevant New Zealand citizen, or evidence supporting the former-family-member renewal provisions.
  • Evidence the New Zealand citizen holds or is eligible for a Subclass 444 visa where relevant.
  • Marriage, birth, adoption, divorce or death documents relevant to family status.
  • Health examinations where required.
  • Police certificates and character documents where required.
  • Australian Values Statement where applicable.
  • Documents addressing any visa refusal, cancellation, No Further Stay or status issue.

What if you separated from the New Zealand partner?

Home Affairs has special criteria allowing some former Subclass 461 holders to qualify for another 461 after the relationship has ended, provided the specific requirements are met. A major condition is that the applicant has not become a member of another person’s family unit. Offshore applicants can also face residence or substantial-ties requirements.

For that specialist pathway, see our 461 renewal after separation, bereavement or time overseas guide.

Can you apply online?

Home Affairs currently says the Subclass 461 application itself is made on paper using Form 147. Since July 2025, applicants can import the paper application into ImmiAccount after receiving the acknowledgement letter. That allows online document uploads, messages, detail updates and some bridging-visa functions.

When should you apply?

Do not leave the application until the last days of the existing visa. Onshore applicants should plan around the current visa expiry, bridging-visa position, police certificates and any relationship breakdown or travel issues. A valid application should be lodged before the current visa ceases where you intend to remain lawful in Australia through the process.

Case example

A 461 holder was four months from expiry and still in the same relationship with the New Zealand citizen. Instead of treating the process as a simple extension request, the applicant completed the current Form 147, updated identity and relationship documents, checked health and character requirements, lodged before expiry and then imported the paper application into ImmiAccount after acknowledgement.

See the official Subclass 461 page and our Subclass 461 Visa hub.

General information only. Further-461 eligibility can change significantly after separation, a new relationship, long periods overseas or changes to the New Zealand citizen’s status.
